Postseason Stunner: Fellas Shock the #3 Seed, Advance to Semi-Finals

PASTA BOWL BREAKDOWN: Great pitching and defense prove to be the winning formula as Fellas send shockwaves through the league

When the playoffs start it’s really a start of a new season. Everyone is 0-0 and what happened during the season doesn’t really matter. And on this night, the Goodfellas proved exactly that as they stunned the #3 seed in the playoffs for their biggest win of the year. It was a tight game all night, thanks to great defense and a stellar pitching job by Bill Pulver as the Fellas advance with a final score of 8-4.

The Fellas struck first with 2 in the 3rd inning with things getting started off with a single from Chris Stack. Dan Ciampino then hit a single and Mike Corcione and Phil Sidoti both hit back to back RBI singles to give them the advantage. Masterblasters struck back with 2 and the Fellas would add one to the scoreboard with a big solo home run from Tom Conlin. Masterblasters would respond with a run and the Fellas answered right back with another run. Mike Corcione hit a double followed by a single from Phil Sidoti. Brendan Clemens then drove in Corcione with a base hit.

With the game tied going into the 6th, the Fellas pulled ahead by adding 3 runs. Tom Conlin reached with a double and would come around to score on a RBI double from Joe Amiccuci. Dan Ciampino then hit a ground ball that was mis-played by the shortstop to score the next 2. In the 7th, the Fellas added an insurance run with a RBI triple from Bill Pulver to conclude the offensive production.

Defense and pitching were outstanding tonight and were the main reasons why the Fellas were able to pull off the upset. Bill Pulver pitched arguably the best game of his Goodfellas career and kept his walk total down dramatically. “I finally listened to some advice and am following through more, I felt really good tonight” added Pulver. “Billy really pitched well tonight, I mean I told him before the game that I would take him to Sonic if he pitched well so it’s a win-win for me” said Jeff Brown. Jeff played a tremendous shortstop tonight and made some web gems that saved a few rallies. Chris Stack also flashed the leather in right center field making some critical plays. There really wasn’t an error made all night which is the key if the Fellas want to make it back to the ship. The Fellas would like to thank their fan base for coming out tonight; the largest crowd they have had all year.

With the regular season behind them and the Fellas getting this huge win, anything happen. #2for10 is still alive and on Monday night the Fellas hope they can keep the momentum going as they face a tall order vs. Little Motors.

Coyne Flip: Fellas Dominate Early But End Up Losing Finale Slugfest

PASTA BOWL BREAKDOWN: Fellas show life but drop season finale in offensive spectacle

The last game of the regular season is always a sentimental one and tonight was indeed sentimental. It marked the ending of a regular season that didn’t go quite the way the Fellas envisioned and certainly made the premise of #2for10 look like a pipe dream. Nonetheless, the Fellas showed signs of what can make them a dangerous team with a quick splurge of power, offense and quality defense. It should make for a fun and exciting postseason; one in which the Fellas will play the role of underdog.

But on this night, the Fellas faced Masterblasters, a team they have defeated twice this year and makes up 2 of their 3 wins this season. With vacations underway, work schedules, football practices and Shaun T / Tony Horton stealing our left fielder the Fellas called on “the family” to help fill in. The Fellas would like to thank Eugene Corcione and Shaun Soucy (Goodfellas debut) for helping out tonight; truly a good time.

The Fellas started this one red hot, to a point where we thought this game was going to be over quick. The Fellas scored 11 runs and every single player the first time around the order got a hit to start the game; only the 2nd time that has happened in franchise history. Brendan Clemens started the game off with a double followed by an RBI single from Brian Hoffman. Bill Pulver then hit a double, followed by a rare but exciting 2 run triple from Tom Conlin. Dan Ciampino then hit an RBI single followed by a booming double from Joe Amicucci. Mike Corcione followed with an RBI single followed an RBI single from Phil Sidoti. Eugene Corcione  then had a 2 run single followed by Shaun Soucy’s first career base hit and RBI. Bill Pulver then circled back around with an RBI triple and Tom Conlin concluded the scoring with an RBI double.

The first inning was an absolute clinic with no “cheapies”; everyone hit the ball hard. However, Masterblasters answered back with 7 runs to make this game closer than anyone though it would be. The Fellas added 4 more in the second with Joe Amicucci starting it off with a double followed by a single from Mike Corcione. Phil Sidoti then hit an RBI single followed by a base hit from Eugene Corcione. Brendan Clemens hit a SAC FLY and Brian Hoffman drove in two with his base knock. Masterblasters then added 3 more runs in the 2nd and 3rd but it was the 4th inning that really hurt as they scored 11 runs. The Fellas were stunned as the offense went silent until the 5th inning where they scored 6 runs. Brian Hoffman led off with a walk followed by a double from Bill Pulver. Tom Conlin then drove in a run with an RBI single and Dan Ciampino did the same with his single to left. Joe Amicucci then game up and hit a colossal 3 run home run that would have been out of any field.

Masterblasters would then score 7 more runs and the Fellas would not score again; dropping this tough game 28-21. Bill Pulver did his best on the mound as did the Fellas defense but the field size and lack of regular playing time defenders was just too much for the Fellas to overcome. “This game had no implications on playoff seeding or anything; was purely for pride.” Said Coach Phil. “Obviously we try to win every game and every loss still stings but overall we had a good time tonight and it was good to see us have some offensive production. Looking forward to the playoffs.”

The Fellas have increased their reward from 50 cents to $1.50 for the safe return of Ryan Williams. Anyone with information is encouraged to email us at whereisryan@gmail.com.

The Late Show: 7th Inning Offense Not Enough

PASTA BOWL BREAKDOWN: Fellas come alive late, but can't overcome S.O.S

After beating S.O.S (first place team) last time they faced them, The Fellas felt confident they could pull the upset again and try to build some momentum as they prepare for the postseason on this raining late 9pm game at the Field of Dreams. With Ciampino, Hoffman, LeMorta, and Williams all missing for this contest it proved to be a tough task as the Fellas dropped this one by a final score of 15-7.

In the first, Nick Panza got the offense started with a single and would come to score via Jeff Brown’s RBI single. The Fellas wouldn’t score again until the 5th, with Jeff Brown starting it off with a double followed by a single from Tom Conlin and a 2 run triple from Andrew Dorr. Joe Amiccuci would then add an RBI single to conclude the scoring in the 5th. In the 7th, the Fellas showed some life with yet another double from Jeff Brown followed by a monster 2 run home run from Tom Conlin. Andrew Dorr and Joe Amiccuci then hit back to back singles and Dorr would score on Phil Sidoti’s RBI single.

With Scott Matheson being a late scratch the Fellas went into the game with 9 and we tip our caps to Clemens, Dorr and Amiccuci for playing the outfield short staffed. All three made good plays in the game. All around defensively the Fellas looked good with defensive standouts being Jeff Brown and Nick Panza. Pulver, although he struggled, hung in there and did the best he could and continues to try and limit his walk total. Pulver was removed in 5th and Conlin came in to finish the game without allowing any runs. "I threw strikes then I think I threw up, I was a little nervous" said Conlin.

In the second inning there was a brief scare as Jeff Brown went to make a double play and Phil Sidoti mis judged the ball; causing it to hit his forearm flush. He was able to finish the game and is listed as day to day. “I don’t know what happened there, I just totally mis judged the ball from Jeff and I got handcuffed” said Phil Sidoti. “I thought we had a good chance to get the guy out at first, I remember getting the ball, touching second, blowing a kiss to the Arnold truck behind plate that featured a delicious sandwich, and threw the ball to first. Just a freak play” said Jeff Brown.

The Fellas have one regular season game remaining and from there all bets are off.

No Bueno: Offensive Struggles Continue As Fellas Drop Another

PASTA BOWL BREAK DOWN: Same book, different chapter; Fellas continue to struggle at the plate.

With the short turn around in between games, the Fellas were hoping to get the offense going to avoid losing their 10th game of the season. However, the power outage continued and the Fellas couldn’t take advantage of solid start by Pulver and great defense; dropping this one 12-3.

The Fellas took an early 2-0 lead with Brendan Clemens reaching with a single and Mark LeMorta hitting a double. Bill Pulver then hit a SAC FLY with Tom Conlin adding an RBI single for the second run. The offense would go into hibernation until the 6th inning where the Fellas would add on 2 more runs. The Fellas were 11/29 (.379) on the evening and against a team like Little Motors that is going to be tough to pull out the victory. This was a one run game up until the 5th but the Fella defense and pitching just couldn’t hold on.

“Everyone is trying very hard, we are just not seeing the production yet; it’s very tough because we are a good hitting team” said Coach Phil.  The Fellas look to regroup on 8/2 vs. a team where they earned 2 of their 3 wins this year.

Game. Set. MATCH. – Fellas Can’t Hang On, Drop Another Close One

PASTA BOWL BREAKDOWN: Fellas can't close out the game, get swept by Matchbox

As the season winds down the Fellas are looking to get hot so they can roll into the playoffs as contenders. However, they just can quite get over the hump as they lost a close game to Matchbox by a final score of 11-8.

With Bill Pulver attending the celebration of the Grand Opening of Burger King in Delmar, coach Phil took the mound and kept it close. Two 5 run innings by Matchbox was really the difference as a couple pitches that were up stayed up and went about 600 feet.  Offensively, there was more life than last game and some new contributors rose from the ashes.

In the first inning, Mark LeMorta started with a base hit and Jeff Brown would drive him in with a single followed by a single from Brian Hoffman. In the 2nd, Dan Ciampino started off with a single and Andrew Dorr hit a monster 2 run home run. Joe Amiccuci then came up and hit a monster home run of his own to give the Fella’s their 4th run.  In the 4th, Amiccuci struck again with a 2 run shot (his second of the game) and then Clemens hit a single followed by a walk from Sidoti. LeMorta then drove them in with a 2 run double but that would conclude the scoring for the Fellas. The Fellas went into the 6th inning leading 8-6 but a 5 run inning by Matchbox put them in a 11-8 deficit. In the bottom of the 7th, the Fellas could not rally leading to the loss and have been swept in the season series against Matchbox.

Defensively the Fellas played much better with defensive standouts including Jeff Brown & Brian Hoffman. Sub, Chris Smith (yes he is a real person), filled in nicely and we appreciate his effort.  Other positives to take away from this game are we kept it close with a playoff contender and guys that have been struggling this year broke out with some nice hits.  Amiccuci & Dorr had great bounce back nights going a combined 4/6 with 3 home runs 5 RBIs. Whether they took a trip to the Louisville Slugger factor or hung out with Brock Lesnar this week it was good to see their production coming back.

In other news, Jeff Brown was very excited during pregame talking about Brick House Tavern and their chicken wing sauce. At one point, he had tears in his eyes due to his extreme excitement.

Grand Sweep: Anemic Offense Stalls Fellas Momentum

PASTA BOWL BREAKDOWN: Fellas offense disappears as Fellas get swept in season series vs. rival.

After back to back wins and the upset of the first place team, the Fellas were on a roll and looked primed to make a run. Unfortunately, their friendly rivalry with Grand Premier for the 2016 season ended with a 3 game sweep by Grand Premier as the Fellas were mercied 15-2.

The Fellas kept it scoreless in the 1st and in the second answered Grand Premier’s two runs scored in the top of the second. Tom Conlin hit a single and Jeff Brown continued his 2016 renaissance by hitting his 6th home run of the year to tie it up. That was essentially all of the offense for the evening as Grand Premier went on to score 12 unanswered runs fueled by spotty defense and subpar pitching from the Fellas. The Fellas look to regroup for next week’s contest and find their stroke in time for the postseason.

HUGE Upset: Fellas Stun First Place Team For Second Straight Win

PASTA BOWL BREAKDOWN: Fellas stun the league with major win over first place team fueled by great hitting and solid defensive play

The roller coaster season continues as the Fellas try to find their identity as contenders rather than pretenders. Tonight’s game was one most people in the league had as a loss in the books for the Fellas before the first pitch was even thrown. Facing the first place and always tough Frozen Ropes the Fellas surprised even themselves; showing they still had plenty of life left and that #2for10 is not out of the question. Not getting carried away, but this was a HUGE win (POG JB) and the Fellas showed up for this big game; putting on an offensive clinic fueled by clutch hitting and some help from mother nature.

The Fellas got off to an early lead by scoring 6 runs in the first with an absolutely dominating offensive attack. Phil Sidoti reached with a base hit and Mark LeMorta then reached via a fielders choicer. Ryan Williams hit an RBI single followed by a single from Bill Pulver. Brian Hoffman then hit a clutch 2 run double followed by another run producing double from the Irishman Tom Conlin. Player of the game and Girl Scout Cookies of America advocate, Jeff Brown, then hit a monster 2 run shot to put the Fellas up 6-0.

Frozen Ropes answered right back by scoring 9 runs to take a 9-6 lead but the Fellas did not waiver. They kept hitting by responding with another 6 spot in the 2nd. Mark LeMorta got it started with a double and Ryan Williams hit a moon shot 2 run homer. Bill Pulver then hit a double followed by a single from Brian Hoffman. Tom Conlin would hit another RBI single and Mr. Downtown Jeffrey Brown hit a 3 run homer to conclude the scoring. The Fellas would score again in the 4th with an RBI single from Dan Ciampino and in the 6th put up another 6 run inning to truly pull away in this one. Tom Conlin got things started with a solo home run followed by back to back to back singles from Jeff Brown, Dan Ciampino and Joe Amiccuci. Brendan Clemens would draw a walk and Sidoti would go on to hit a SAC Fly, scoring Ciampino.  Mark LeMorta then hit a 2 run double followed by an RBI single from Ryan Williams.

Defensively the Fellas looked solid and great plays were made all around. Defensive standouts included Jeff Brown, Brian Hoffman and the perfectly positioned Joe Amiccuci. Bill Pulver pitched a great game, and kept his walk total down to a respectable level. “He seemed much more comfortable tonight” said fan of the year contender Jamie Birdsall Pulver. “He definitely deserves an extra snack pack in his lunch tomorrow.”

The wind played a major factor in this game as well as the jet stream in left center field contributed to the 4 Goodfellas home runs but all balls were well hit. “I had put a great swing on it and the ball just carried.” Said Tom Conlin, I like hitting it out because I don’t have to run as hard”

Jeff Brown was very happy with his performance and has put up solid numbers after his slow start to the season. “My season has kind of been like a Thanksgiving turkey, takes awhile to cook and if you take it out of the oven too soon it just wont taste right. But if you give it the time it needs, there’s nothing like it.” (this quote was said while Jeff was ordering pizza from the Domino’s app on his phone)

Ryan Williams was not available for a quote after the game due to the insurmountable amount of dirt that was still in his mouth from his aggressive slide. We are certain whatever he had to say would have been inspiring. We also had two players that will certainly be fined for their attire this game, with Ciampino wearing the 2014/2015 throwback uniform and Brian Hoffman wearing shorts from the 1995 Miami Dolphins Training Camp. Fines are certain to be handed out for the team party in the Fall. There may also be a fine for post game beer’s disappearing and it appears that Joe Amiccuci was the culprit. He was so excited to beat his former team that he celebrated by stealing the team beer and drinking them all when he got home. Due to the circumstances and genuine happiness, a fine will most likely be waived. Mike Corcione was also in attendance tonight sporting his new work attire and supporting the Fellas. He hopes to return next week and when asked if he was excited to play next game he said “yes”, which was about the same level excitement he had shown just hours earlier with Italy defeated Spain in soccer.

It should be noted that hitting coach Big Phil Sidoti was in attendance, it appears his presence has sparked the offense and we hope he continues to attend.  Mark LeMorta credits his big game to the big man. “Big Phil comes and we start to hit, no coincidence there and he should get an honorable mention for POG”

Rely On Ry: Williams Leads Fellas to Second Victory of Season Via Walk Off

After last week’s difficult game the Fellas knew tonight’s opponent was unlike any other opponent they faced all year; they’ve actually beaten them. Looking to capitalize Bill Pulver took the mound in a much improved effort, followed by solid defense and JUST enough offense to secure a 8-7 walk-off victory.

The Fellas went scoreless until the 4th, where they trailed 5-0. However, in the 4th Phil Sidoti started the inning off with a base hit followed by Mark LeMorta’s first home run of the year to make it a 5-2 game. In the 5th, Jeff Brown hit a solo home run and Mike Corcione reached on a double and would come on to score to make it a 5-4 game.

In the 6th inning Masterblasters looked like they were going to rally and go ahead by a large margin but Bill Pulver hung in there and player of the game Ryan Williams made 2 defensive plays in that one inning to save the game with two fantastic catches.  It could have easily been a 5 run inning for the opposition but the defense kept it to 2. The Fellas would then tie that game at 7 in the bottom of the 6th, led by back to back home runs from Ryan Williams and Bill Pulver. Tom Conlin would then hit a single and Jeff Brown would drive him in with a single to tie the game.

The Fellas kept Masterblasters at bay in the 7th and in the bottom of the 7th, Phil Sidoti and Mark LeMorta reached with singles and Ryan Williams would bring it home with a single, scoring Sidoti to give the Fellas the walk off victory and their second win of the season.

“Ya know the NBA did steal a game, steal a taco – we stole this one I think it calls for more tacos” said Jeff Brown who left the field immediately after the game to set up his tent at Taco Bell for free taco day on Tuesday.

Mike Corcione played in his first full game since shoulder surgery and looked good in his return. “I had fun” said Corcione.

Corcione was all smiles, as was the rest of the team after a hard fought victory. Mark LeMorta was also all smiles, picking up his first home run of the year. “This definitely calls for more hair gel” Said LeMorta.

Ryan Williams, not only grateful to arrive to the game on time on the right day  was very appreciative of his team’s unanimous selection of him as play of the game. “It was great to contribute and help the team I will celebrate with some SKOL.”

Dominican Dominance: Overwhelmed Fellas Drop to 1-7

PASTA BOWL BREAKDOWN: Dominicans just too much to handle as Fellas drop to 1-7

After last week's tough loss the Fellas knew they would have their hands full with the Dominicans. True to form, the Dominicans came out swinging and combine that with rough defense and sub-par pitching and you have the same formula we've seen all year. For the second time this year, the Fellas were defeated via the mercy rule by a final score of 19-3.

As a team, the Fellas only had 7 hits and only scored 3 runs. Defensively balls were hit hard and the Fellas just couldn't make the plays and the Dominicans made the Fellas suffer via the long ball. Bill Pulver had a roller coaster night on the mound, walking the bases loaded in the first but getting out of the jam only allowing 2 runs in the 1st. However his walk total continued to rise and the Dominicans were all over him by 3rd inning. Good effort, just a better hitting team.

Jeff Brown was not available due to a knee injury and he apparently is upset that Coach Phil brought Tom Conlin ice cream. "I miss one game and coach brings ice cream? I never got ice cream....." Said Brown

Heartbreak Kids: Fellas Lose Late Lead, Drop to 1-6

Last week was a tough game, one that hung over your head in between games due to the poor defensive showing and lack of offense. This week, however, stings in a different way as the Fellas let another game slip away after being in control for the majority of the game.

The Fellas came out of the gate strong by scoring two runs in the first. Brendan Clemens got things started with a base hit followed by a Giambisk walk from Phil Sidoti. Mark LeMorta than hit an RBI double followed by an RBI single from Ryan Williams. Matchbox would match the 2 runs in the top of the second but the Fellas answered right back with 2 of their own.  Chris Stack led off with a double followed by a single from Dan Ciampino. Joe Amiccuci then walked to set up the SAC fly for Brendan Clemens. Phil Sidoti then hit an RBI single for the Fellas second run of the inning. In the bottom of the third it looked like the Fellas were going to pull away as they scored another 4 runs.

Bill Pulver started the inning with a base hit followed by an opposite field 2 run homer from Tom Conlin. Brian Hoffman then picked up a base hit followed by a base hit from Chris Stack. Joe Amiccuci then hit a SAC FLY followed by back to back singles from Brendan Clemens & Phil Sidoti.

Matchbox slowly started to creep back into this game and the Fellas offense started to cool off. Going into the top of the 7th the Fellas held a slim 9-7 lead. Poor defensive plays and the “walk bug” led to Matchbox scoring 6 runs to take a 13-9 lead. The Fellas responded with a solo home run from Tom Conlin and back to back doubles from Hoffman and Stack. Ciampino & Amiccuci then hit back to back SAC FLYs to make it a one run game. Clemens would single but a ground out from Phil Sidoti would end the contest, 13-12; leaving the Fellas stunned in disbelief.

“This one stings because we had the game the whole way and let it slip through” said Brendan Clemens. “We really should have won this game."

“We seem to always have that one bad inning and tonight it came in the 7th. “Said Phil Sidoti. “The positive here though is we played well overall and our bats showed life.”

Bill Pulver returned to the mound in this game and looked good overall, just had that one bad inning in the 7th. “I kind of ran out of gas” said Pulver. “I was definitely feeling it”

The Fellas have a short turnaround as they play 2nd place Little Motors on Monday night.

EmbarrASSED: Fellas Suffer Good Ole’ Fashion Ass Kicking, Drop to 1-5

PASTA BOWL BREAKDOWN: Errors, lack of offense lead to Fellas in worst start in last 5 years

With The Fellas looking to get something going they entered this game against Grand Premier with high expectations but poor defensive play and lack of offense led to their demise as they lost by a blowout score of 23-6. The game was close through the first few innings but in the 4th inning, Grand Premier blew it wide open by scoring 12 runs which was due to the poor play by the Goodfellas and just solid good hitting by Grand Premier.

For the offense that the Goodfellas did produce, the first 2 runs came in the first from a RBI single from Nick Panza and a SAC Fly from Tom Conlin. Phil Sidoti would add an RBI single in the second with an RBI single being contributed by Mark LeMorta. In the 4th, Joe Amicucci hit a towering home run to left and in the 5th Bill Pulver had a SAC FLY to conclude the scoring.

“This was one of those games where errors were contagious” said Brendan Clemens “As soon as one guy made an error it seemed like the whole team started making them.” Jeff Brown, who yet again upset that he missed Taco Tuesday at work, had this to add: “We just played sloppy, no one could win that game with the way we played, we have to get better.” On a bright note, Mike Corcione made his 2016 debut with an at bat in the 5th, he looks to rejoin the team full time in a few weeks.

Power Outage: Lack Of Offense Leads to Loss

PASTA BOWL BREAKDOWN: Virutally no offense leads to loss aganist top team

After last week’s big win the Fellas were looking to keep the momentum going against first place and undefeated S.O.S. Unfortunately, the Fellas offense struggled and dropped this game by a final score of 14-2. The Fellas were a combined 7/ 26 (.269) and just couldn’t get anything going. It wasn’t until the 6th inning where they scored their first run.

The only offensive highlight worth noting was Ryan Williams 2 run single in the 6th. Defensively there were some nice plays made but also plays that should have been made. Nonetheless, the Fellas have now played each divisional opponent once and sit at a record 1-4. They will begin the cycle all over again as they take on Grand Premier in a rivalry game next week.

Beez 2 Da Treez: Clemens Homers, Fellas Step Up For First Win Of 2016

PASTA BOWL BREAKDOWN: Fellas step up big at the plate and with clutch defense earn their first win

After a tough start to the season where the Fellas could easily be 3-0 instead of 0-3, the Fellas knew tonight’s game could be a potential turning point for the season. The Fellas made it clear early on that tonight there was no way they were starting 0-4.

In the first inning the Fellas poured it on by scoring 5 runs. Player of the game, Brendan Clemens, led the game off with triple and would come on to score via Phil Sidoti’s SAC fly. Mark LeMorta and Bill Pulver would add back to back singles followed by an RBI single from Ton Conlin. Jeff Brown then hit his second home run of the season, a massive 3 run shot to conclude the scoring.  The Fellas would then go on to score 7 more runs in the next two innings and started to run away with it. Clemens added another base hit followed by an RBI single from Mark LeMorta. Bill Pulver then hit a towering homer to left to tack on two more in the second. In the third, Chris Stack led off with a walk and would come around to score via Joe Amiccuci’s double to left field. Mike Nicastro then drove in Joe with an RBI single but Brendan Clemens put the exclamation point on the inning with a 2 run home run.

The Fellas would add 2 more runs via back to back RBI singles from Phil Sidoti and Mark LeMorta in the 5th to give them 14 runs. Masterblasters scored 9 runs in later innings but the game was well under control by the Goodfellas. Tremendous defensive plays were made all around and Nick Marciano pitched a great game; earning his first win as part of the Goodfellas franchise.

The Fellas could have been home even earlier but a base running blunder by Michael Nicastro avoided the Fellas from winning via the mercy rule. “My head wasn’t in the game I made a mistake” said Michael Nicastro. “He’s just one dumb sum bitch, but I still love him” said Coach Phil. Player of the game, Brendan Clemens had a great night and seems to have turned the corner. “It felt great and I feel I got my swing back, it was a huge win for us.”

Biggy Smalls: Big Effort But Fellas Come Up Short, Drop to 0-3

PASTA BOWL BREAKDOWN: Fellas show they can hang with the best but lack of clutch hitting and late defensive blunders lead to an 0-3 start.

After last week’s tough loss the Fellas came into this game with a STACKed line up and were ready to rock and roll. The Fellas faced Little Motors AKA the Dominicans which are known for their slick defense and big hitting. The Fellas gave it a tremendous effort, with great defense and big moments from new contributors but just like the last 2 games they just didn’t’ have enough and lost the game 10-6.

In the first inning, the Fellas scored 4 runs and took an early lead by an RBI triple from Mark LeMorta and a productive RBI groundout from Bill Pulver. Nick Panza and Tom Conlin then hit back to back singles and both scored on Dan Ciampino’s double.

Little Motor’s tied the game in the second but the Fellas put 2 more back on the board led by back to back home runs from Jeff Brown & Chris Stack (Jeff’s still hasn’t landed). Little Motors added 1 more run in the 3rd and the Fellas offense went quiet the rest of the way and didn’t score a run.  It was a 2 run game going into the 7th but Little Motors made it a 4 run game and the Fellas went quietly in the bottom half dropping to 0-3 on the young season.

Pitcher Nick Marciano pitched a tremendous game in his Goodfellas debut, and his effort was greatly appreciated. He was amped up all game and brought a nice spark to the bench. Chris Stack arrived late but literary walked out of his car, stepped in the box and hit a home run. A moment that will certainly qualify for moment of the year.  Jeff Brown was the defensive standout tonight and looked sharp at SS. He also broke out of his mini-slump and had a great night at the plate. However, his chatter during the 6th inning distracted Coach Phil, causing him to drop a routine fly ball. “I swear I heard the ice cream truck and I got excited so I yelled STOP! Hoping the ice cream man would stop, I think I distracted coach.” said Jeff Brown.

“I missed it, plain and simple and luckily it didn’t hurt us but yeah I mean Jeff needs to control his cravings.” said Coach Phil.

Matchbox Derby: Fellas Drop 0-2 After Subpar Performance

After last week’s heartbreaking opener the Fellas set their sights on Matchbox; a foe they have played in the past during their B3 days with good success. However, this was a different and much improved Matchbox team and they came out swinging early.

With Bill Pulver tying the knot, Coach Phil took his spot and early on gave up 2 solo home runs. Although he was giving up the long ball, no one was on base so the damage sustainable (that would change). The Goodfellas offense through the first 3 innings was non-existent with the first hit not coming until the third from Mike Nicastro who filled in for us last minute. Matchbox would go on to hit 3 more home runs prior to the 6th and it wasn’t until the bottom of the 4th that the Fellas got their bats going by scoring 4 runs. At that point it was 5-4 and the Fellas were still alive. However, the 3rd time through the order the Matchbox bats were prepared and pitching once again lead to the Fellas demise. Matchbox would go on to score 10 more runs, with a grand total of 9 home runs hit on the night. “They have some great hitters but there’s only so many ways I can throw the ball in there; that third time around they were all over it” added Coach Phil “It’s frustrating because we were just on our way back offensively.”

In the bottom of the 7th, the Fellas went out a little rally scoring 5 runs to make it 15-9 but just didn’t’ have enough to come back and are now 0-2 on the young season.

Although the result wasn’t what we wanted there were still positives to take away. Rookie Nick Panza looked fantastic defensively and also had 5 RBI with a HR in his debut. Mike Nicastro, who was designated for assignment by his former team, played a great 2B and had 2 line drive hits. Ryan Williams also continued his hot hitting with a 3/4 2 RBI night. Although, in the 4th it became clear that he may need new prescription eye glasses as he attempted to score on a foul ball off the lighting pole (one DSB).

The road to the ‘ship doesn’t get any easier as the Fellas take on a strong Dominican team on Monday night at Mullens Park.

Icy Hot: Fellas Hot Bats Not Enough, Drop Chilly Opener

PASTA BOWL BREAKDOWN: Fellas hot bats not enough as defensive mishaps and walks lead to missed opportunity

With the forecast looking unfavorable from the start of the day many thought the opener was going to be delayed. However, the field was in good enough shape and the cold temperatures were not enough for the league to postpone the game.

At 7:30 PM the 10th Opening Day in franchise history was underway and the Fellas offense came out of the gate ready to drive in runs. Phil Sidoti got the first hit of the year followed by a triple from reigning Co-MVP Ryan Williams. Speaking of MVPs, the other CO-MVP Bill Pulver followed up with a monster 2 run home run to put the Fellas up 3-0.  However, in the bottom of the second, defensive mishaps lead to Grand Premier scoring 7 runs putting the Fellas in a 4 run hole. The Fellas answered right back by scoring three runs. Joe Amiccuci & Dan Ciampino each had base hits followed by a walk from Brendan Clemens. Phil Sidoti then had a base hit followed by RBI singles from Ryan Williams and Bill Pulver. Brian Hoffman then picked up his first hit with liner of the middle.

Bill Pulver ran into some pitching woes followed by some defensive blunders for Grand Premier to score 7 runs over the next three innings. However, the hot Fellas offense kept chipping away and at one point took the lead. The hitting brigade continued with a solo shot from Dan Ciampino followed by a base hit from Matt Grill. Clemens drew a walk and Sidoti picked up his third hit to set up back to back 2 RBI doubles by Williams and Pulver. In the 6th, Ciampino & Grill picked up base hits and LeMorta drove in a run followed by another RBI from Ryan Williams.

Entering the 7th the Fellas were down by 2 and things got off to a good start with Hoffman and Conlin picking up base hits. Ciampino would drive in another run to cut the deficit to 1 but the Fellas were unable to finish the comeback and dropped the opener by a final score of 15-14.

“We came up just a little short tonight but we had a good showing against a guy we usually struggle against” added Goodfellas leadoff hitter Brendan Clemens. “Next week we will bounce back.”

Jeff Brown, who already was disappointed that they canceled Taco Tuesday at his work, was trying to look at the outcome positively. “I mean I had rough day, and the way we lost was tough but I think everyone is happy with how we hit.”

The Fellas look to bounce back next Thursday and would like to congratulate Bill Pulver and Jamie Birdsall on their upcoming wedding this weekend.
